DC Comics certainly made a statement this past weekend. When so many events have been cancelled because of the current pandemic, DC along with Warner Media and AT&T decided to take this opportunity to make something new for fans, and so came the creation of the DC Fandome. The Fandome was an all-day event that featured presentations covering the properties of DC Comics. With such an unprecedented event I decided to take a digital trip to the Fandome and I have to say that, for the most part, I was impressed. The event had several standout moments, like an intriguing panel about foreign voice actors dubbing Batman and a hilarious riff of Batman 66 by Batman Beyond’s Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle, but for me the main attraction was the DC Films; and they were there in full force. From the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 to the anticipated release of The Batman, DC had plenty to showcased when it came its film division and here are some of the highlights from the Hall of Heroes.
Wonder Woman 1984 Shines with Brand New Trailer
The event kicked off with none other than Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel to the 2017 film arrives in theaters this year and features Diana (Gal Gadot) in a new adventure taking place in the 80’s. The film’s panel featured a decent Q&A with director Patty Jenkins, as well as the cast, and even featured a surprise appearance from the iconic Lynda Carter. However, the highlight of the panel came at the end when the latest trailer was revealed. Like the first trailer the new preview teases the scheme of Maxwell Lorde (Pedro Pascal) and the answer to this world dominating plot continues to be a mystery. Yet perhaps the biggest takeaway was the relationship between Diana and Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) and how their conflict leads Minerva to transform into Cheetah. In fact, the villainess’ ferrous form was finally revealed as she battled Wonder Woman in the trailer’s climax. Overall, the panel did its job by not only giving viewers some insight on the upcoming blockbuster but enticing that anticipation with an exciting new trailer.
The Flash Speeds Through the Multiverse with New Details and Concept Art for 2022 Film
One of my favorite DC heroes is the scarlet speedster The Flash. The fastest man alive has had a movie in the works for quite some time with many filmmakers being attached to the project only to leave for various reasons. However, that changed when Andy Muchietti, director of It and It: Chapter Two, came on to helm the superhero film. Along with Muchietti joining the film, the latest update states that The Flash would not only feature Batman but Batmen as both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as both are returning to reprise their respected roles. This information indicated that the film will not only deal with time travel but the parallel universes as well; and according to movie’s panel that seems to be the case. The segment featured both Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Andy Muchietti as well as screenwriter Christina Hodson and producer Barbra Muchietti and the groups discussed the Flash’s relevance in the entire DC multiverse. In fact, the character’s dealing with alternate realities played prevalent role in last year’s television event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, which briefly featured Miller’s Flash. That moment, along with this panel, indicates that this movie will not just emphasize the studio’s new direction for their DC films but perhaps hint at bigger things to come in future projects. Speculation aside, the panel also showed off concept art for the movie which showcased a sleeker suit for Flash as well as featured Batman in action. While this panel was among the shorter one that is not say it was disappointing as the brief details for this movie makes me that more to see The Flash when it run into theaters in 2022.
The Suicide Squad Panel Explodes with Reveals and Humor!
In 2016 DC’s unpredictable group, the Suicide Squad, made their way to the big screen. Although it received a divisive reception, and has had its share of controversy, the movie found some commercial success to the point where the studio decided to move forward with a sequel. This sequel, simply known as The Suicide Squad, will be hitting theaters next summer with director James Gunn leading Task Force X into a new blockbuster. There has been much mystery surrounding this project particularly just who is playing who in this sequel. Well at long last these details have come to light as the panel revealed the new Suicide Squad. Along with returning characters like Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), the movie will feature an array of characters such as Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Thinker (Peter Capaldi), King Shark (Steve Agee) and Peacemaker (John Cena)-and that is just some of the names attached to this ensemble. With the full cast reveal came a behind the scenes look at The Suicide Squad which highlighted the film’s intense action. While this preview was insightful what really took me by surprised was the cast themselves. For starters the cast features characters that I would have never guessed would be appear in a movie such as this, but more importantly was the interactions between the ensemble. Most of the panel featured the cast playing a makeshift quiz and it was entertaining to say the least. This was telling as it not only shows a cast filled with vibrant individual but an ensemble that could have a great chemistry with one another. With these factors in mind, it could indicate that this 2021 blockbuster may very well be a memorable sequel,or at the very least just an entertaining one.
Justice League Unites in Snyder Cut Panel
If there was one movie that I was eager to hear about, it was Justice League. The film has certainly had a memorable year as after much speculation and hope it was revealed that Zack Snyder’s Justice League would be coming to HBO Max. The situation behind this director’s cut is one that is surrounded in complications and controversy, but point is that the 2017 film will now be released in a manner that Zack Snyder intended. To commemorate this upcoming feature a panel was held at DC Fandome to give some insight on the anticipated cut. Along with League themselves giving Snyder questions, Zack himself became the moderator as he interviewed fans Fiona Zheng and Dexter Washington who have been adamant players in the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement. Last and certainly not least was the unveiling of a new preview to Justice League. The sneak peek featured an array of moments both familiar and new and some that may have been a little too revealing; then again given the situation perhaps these reveals were understandable. From beginning to end this preview was noteworthy and done a style that lived up to Zack Snyder himself. This panel was eventful in many ways it certainly gave some hope that Justice League may finally receive the justice it truly deserves.
Black Adam Surges with Reveals of JSA and Adam himself!
Black Adam is another character that has been lingering in development hell. While the likes of The Flash has gone through multiple production changes, Black Adam has been in talks to have a movie for well over a decade. The godly warrior was originally supposed to be featured in 2019’s Shazam but the filmmakers decided to hold on that confrontation in order to give the character his own movie. Now the stage has been set and Black Adam will be crashing onto the silver screen in 2021. The segment for this movie was hosted by none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who is also playing the title character. The segment not only showed off concept art for Black Adam, but Johnson’s narration for the scenes gave some insight on how The Most Electrifying Man in Entertainment will portray the Anti-Hero; and to put it simply Johnson already sounds impressive as Adam. However Black Adam will not be the only superpowered character featured in this film as the movie will see the debut of the JSA (Justice Society of America). It has already been revealed that Atom Smasher (Noah Centino) will be appearing in the film but the panel revealed that the iconic team will feature the likes of Hawkman, Cyclone and Doctor Fate. While I am eager to see Johnson’s portrayal of Black Adam, I cannot deny that I am excited to see this portrayal of the famed superhero team. The Rock promised to shake things up the DC Universe to the point where he called out the Justice League with a major emphasis on challenging Superman; and I can only hope that there is a sense of foreshadowing in Rock’s threat.
Shazam 2 Receive Furious Title
While movies such as Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad received hype going into the DC Fandome, one title that quietly made an appearance at this event was Shazam. The story of boy becoming a hero made its way to big screen in 2019 and was able to find success with both critics and moviegoers. So, it did not take long for a sequel to get underway and the next adventure for Shazam is schedule to hits on November 4,2022. Little is known about this sequel and that was evident in the short panel hosted by Shazam himself: Zachery Levi. In an entertaining segment Levi did everything in his power to keep quiet about the movie to point where even director David F.Sanberg and comedian Sinbad made appearances in this off-shoot panel. However, one thing was made clear and that was the movie’s title. According to the director himself the movie will be called Shazam: Fury of the Gods. With a subtitle like that one can only imagine what the implication of this sequel will be. Then again given the movie’s source material Fury of the Gods could mean anything. Regardless of what this title indicates it was good to get an update for this movie and it seems likely that sparks will fly in 2022 when Shazam: Fury of the Gods hits theaters.
The Batman Steals the Show with Gripping Trailer
Last and certainly not least was The Batman. The next take on the Dark Knight has been anticipated project for me as I am curious to see both director Matt Reeves’ take on the title as well as Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the caped crusader; and fortunately, the panel gave me an idea of both. Along with Reeves’ insight on this new adaption the panel also featured a trailer for The Batman and it definitely made an impression. From the mysterious tone to the menacing presence of The Riddler (Paul Dano), the trailer captures Batman in a way that was new but familiar at the same time. The tension of this preview was enticing to the say the least and it makes me that more excited to see where this movie goes. Actually, to be frank, describing this preview does not do it justice so if you have not seen it yet I highly recommend you do. To put it simply, the fall of 2021 cannot come any sooner.
DC Fandome accomplished a lot of things this past weekend and the DC Films was among the event’s successes. From the surprising content to the new direction the DC Films had plenty to offer the event as well as provide a little entertainment along the way. The buzz and excitement this event created was impressive as I find myself eager to see these upcoming films-and I was eager enough as it was. While the event may not have been perfect it accomplished what it needed to and it showed that there is bright frontier for the DC films and the worlds they will create.
